The story of Bacteriophages

Bacteriophages "MediPhag" - protection without antibiotics"

История о Бактериофагах

In 1929, Alexander Fleming discovered the world's first antibiotic, penicillin, and the era of antibiotics began in the early 1940s. In 1945, speaking in his Nobel speech, he said: "There may come a time when penicillin can be bought in any store. Then there is a danger that an ignorant person can easily prescribe a dose for himself and expose microbes to non-lethal amounts of the drug, making them resistant."

Today, for any bacterial infection, the doctor will prescribe you antibiotics – this is the standard of treatment. However, we know that antibiotics are far from harmless. Yes, they kill pathogenic microflora, but at the same time they destroy useful microorganisms. In addition, antibiotics have many side effects on all organs and systems. Another drawback is their strict admission scheme. It is necessary to take antibiotics at a certain time, and it is necessary to complete the entire course. Otherwise, bacteria may develop resistance to this means. As predicted almost 75 years ago by the man who discovered the first antibiotic, drug resistance is already there. Today, the spread of so-called antibiotic-resistant microorganisms is becoming a catastrophe. In the current situation, bacteriophages discovered almost a century ago can make a worthy alternative to antibiotics in the treatment of many diseases of bacterial origin. Bacteriophages, which literally means "bacteria eaters", are special viruses that can multiply only in the presence of a certain type of pathogenic bacteria. Bacteriophages can reproduce their own kind only at the expense of bacteria. But this peculiarity is only in the hands of a person: after all, the bacteriophage not only feeds on the cells of harmful bacteria, but also destroys them literally to the ground. When there are no bacteria left, bacteriophages are excreted from the body naturally, without having a toxic effect on the body. Bacteriophages are an excellent alternative to antibiotics, because, in comparison with chemical preparations, they have the following advantages: There are no contraindications to taking bacteriophages. They can be prescribed to pregnant, nursing mothers and children of any age, including premature babies. Important features of bacteriophages that provide their advantage over other drugs are high specificity to target microorganisms, good compatibility with other drugs, the absence of allergic reactions and the effect of normalization of disturbed micro-biocenosis in the treatment of intestinal dysbiosis and vaginosis in women. That is why today bacteriophages have come to the attention of scientists. In medicine, bacteriophages staphylococcal, streptococcal, dysentery polyvalent, salmonella polyvalent, klebsiella, piobacteriophage, coli, proteus, coli-proteus and others are used.
